TokyWoky – Coach of the Month – AirsoftAstronaut

Today we're going to be looking at our coach of the month for February - March 2018: AirsoftAstronaut. Since he became a coach just three months ago he has answered over 800 questions and helped people with a huge range of questions ranging from what magazines go with which gun, what pouches to use, and what brands of guns to go with. Piers, aka AirsoftAstronaut is, plays in and around Essex and has been playing and following the sport for two years, regularly playing at Skirmish Airsoft Billericay, Dragons Lair and Plantation Airsoft. We caught up with him to ask him a few questions, along with getting a few photos of his loadout, and to find out where he plays.

PatrolBase Jonny
How long have you been playing?

AirsoftAstronaut
I’ve been playing and following the sport for around 2 years now after a friend introduced me to it.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your local / go-to site?

AirsoftAstronaut
I started playing at a Skirmish site but since Fall am a regular at Dragons Lair and Plantation Airsoft.

What is your Favourite Gun?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite Airsoft gun so far is the CSI XR-5 AEG, I jumped at the chance to get this sci fi gun at (In my opinion) such a great price. Having been given a full serviced over Christmas it now fires at 345fps and occasionally I’ll use a tracer and Red tracer bb’s. (I can confirm that NUPROL STANAG Mid caps feed into this gun, but G&G M16 High caps do not, I also use the CSI brand magazines for this gun too, and know how those specifically work on the inside.)

PatrolBase Jonny
What loadout do you run?

AirsoftAstronaut
My current loadout consists of my much loved Helikon CPU Jacket and trousers in OD green (The fluffy neck collar was the selling point), I wear a pair of Woodland oak high top boots and some very unprotective 5.11 Tactec A2 gloves (This is for the ability to load pistol and gas gun magazines without accidentally letting go and breaking the bb follower.). I wear an OD helmet and custom fitted a tandard mesh mask to it, and wear some bolle ranger glasses as eye pro.
My loadout “Rig” is a Condor Lazer cut black chest rig with 2x double 5.11 grey pistol magazine pouches on, plus 2 of the 5.11 tactec 9mm pouches, and a red EMT pouch, and Helikon Mini Med pouch Red. (These pouches are of great use on the Blue team)
As for the guns, I tend to run my KJW KP-08 Hicapa, or WE G17 which I’ve got some internal upgrades on order for. from there I usually use my CSI XR-5 (it’s white) or my KJW KC-02 DMR, but I’m still waiting for the summer to come and for more magazines to effectively use it.
I transitioned from a belt rig to a chest rig because with my DMR, and that I sometimes use my AEG’s at the same tile, it’s easier to store all of the magazines, though I do still miss the lightweight feel of a belt.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Camo?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite camouflage is probably MTP Tropic, if there was a digital version that’d be brilliant, it is nice and dark and still blends with woodland areas.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Airsoft Moment?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite Airsoft moment was at Dragons Lair in Summer 2017 where I charged a small fort by one of the bridges with a battle cry,one of the four defending from that place ran off, didn’t want to get shot by me 🙂 and I finished off the rest with my G17.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you prefer Gas, AEG, or HPA?

AirsoftAstronaut
With the current weather I favour AEG’s, it’s less expensive to keep them in good shape and working, but with my DMR and pistols in the future I may consider HPA given the typical British wet/sub 20 Celsius weather and the improved consistency (plus I HATE mag freeze issues on gas guns.)

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Brand?

AirsoftAstronaut
Having limited experience with airsoft guns of different brands, such that it’s mostly talking to others in safe zones about their guns and experiences with them, as well as through browsing forums and Tokywoky as well. I’d say that my favourite brand for airsoft guns would be ASG (I believe KJW is asg going by both brand symbols on the box of my DMR and Hicapa.) they have a large range of airsoft guns, and other things like their Storm Grenade. For clothing I’d go with Helikon & tactical gear 5.11 because I love their gloves and the TacTec magazine pouches have an easy to remove molle webbing design.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you have any advice for a new player

AirsoftAstronaut
My advice for a new airsoft player is this: if you’ve never played before I urge for them to see what the sport is about by playing a rental game at their most local site. From there it would be extreamely helpful to have a browse through the UKAPU website for guidelines on legal issues and guidelines such as two tone etc.
After this it is a case of being prepared to spend a sum of money (I myself found this to be larger than expected until I read up about Airsoft thoroughly online) on the “basics” which is likely consisting of a gun, appropriate power source, usually a LiPo as most beginners go for AEG’s, from there simply ensure they’ve got some suitable footwear and eye and face protection, and perhaps learn about their new gun at home before playing at a site with it so that they understand the gun, it’s functionality and anything important about it such as fps, magazine compatibility etc (On the topic of magazines I’d suggest avoiding dry firing as it’ll damage the gun.)

Once again, thanks to Piers for helping the community out on TokyWoky, and thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Also thanks to Skirmish Airsoft Billericay, who provided us with the images, who are based in Billericay, Essex. Situated in the heart of beautiful Essex Countryside yet only 10 minutes from junction 29 of the M25 Skirmish Airsoft, Billericay is only 20 minutes from East London. They are only 5 minutes from Basildon and 15 minutes from Chelmsford. TokyWoky – Coach of the Month – Krypter

Today we're going to be looking at our coach of the month for January - December 2018: Krypter. Since he became a coach a year ago he has answered over 1200 questions and helped people with a huge range of questions ranging from what is the best gun to buy, what comes with new guns, and helpful hints and tips for new players. Malcolm, aka Krypter is, from Fife in Scotland  and has been Airsofting for four years, playing at local sites both Indoor CQB and at Outdoors Woodland Sites. We caught up with him to ask him a few questions, along with getting a few photos of his loadout, and to find out where he plays.

PatrolBase Jonny
How long have you been playing?

Krypter
I've been playing airsoft for about 4 years now, my only regret is that I didn't try it sooner.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your local / go-to site?

Krypter
I have 2 sites I try to visit regularly as they both offer a different style of play. The Fort is a large woodland site with a lot of great features and Fife Wargames is my chosen site for when I want the action to be a little closer, it offers a good mix of mid-to-close range firefights.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Gun?

Krypter
The Tokyo Marui HK417 recoil is my favourite gun, It was the first one I bought new and it gets used almost every game. I have to make a point of leaving it behind in order for my other guns to see any game time.

PatrolBase Jonny
What loadout do you run?

Krypter
My normal loadout is based around a multicam Warrior 901 chest rig with matching mag pouches. A Viper dump pouch at the rear, a Viper grenade pouch on the chest and on my right side, a double pistol mag pouch.
The clothing side of my gear, I have definitely neglected, running with either the original, and now slightly faded, Viper "V-Cam" combat shirt and Elite trousers I bought when I first started playing, or an almost identical set in plain boring black, with a pair of 5.11 taclite 8" boots and a random pair of unbranded gloves.

For head protection I have a Nuprol Fast helmet with a One Tigris multicam cover, that's paired with a clip fastened ACM Padded Half Face Mesh Mask.

Finishing off with the all important eye protection, currently provided by some excellent Revision Desert Locust goggles. I always carry a spare set of eye protection with me during games and these come in the form of a pair of Bolle Raider glasses.

I also recently added a modified Viper drop leg platform to carry a TM mk23, which in turn is kept secure by a DTD 3d printed holster.
Previously I used a WAS universal pistol holster, which has been relegated to being a backup.

Typically the mk23 is paired with the TM HK417, which externally has no attachments aside from the occasional FMA foregrip, but internally has been upgraded over the years as parts have worn down.
It's currently loaded up with a BTC spectre mosfet, r-hop, SHS steel gears and a metal toothed piston, all shimmed and sits at a comfortable 345-350fps. My battery of choice is a VP Racing 7.4v 2600mAh 25C LiPo with deans connector and it likes to fire Nuprol RZR 0.32g bio bbs.

For room clearing purposes I use a Dynatex .38 time delayed grenade or the trusty mk4 thunderflash.
I always take at least one back up weapon with me and my current weapon of choice is a Krytac LVOA-S. It's totally stock internally but has a NUPROL NP Point E1 RDS Sight slung on the top.

Up until recently, I used a Viper 3 point sling to help carry these around but after around 2 years of use it gave up on me and I'm currently looking into replacements.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Camo?

Krypter
I love the Kryptek camo patterns, it's just hard to find all the extras for a full loadout.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Airsoft Moment?

Krypter
My favourite moments usually happen at the safe zone, the one I recall the clearest was at my very first game. I had borrowed my friends M249 SAW for the day and let loose. At lunchtime, after terrorising the opposing team for most of the morning I was surprised at how many complete strangers would come up and start asking me questions about it. I couldn't answer any of them so we decided (with my friends consent) to start stripping it down for a look at what was inside.

It was one of those strange moments that really reinforce how great the average Airsoft sites playerbase truly is, especially to newcomers.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you prefer Gas, AEG, or HPA?

Krypter
AEG is my preference, gas is great when it's warm but too unreliable in the cold. I've only just started experimenting with HPA (in the form of a TM breacher) so maybe my opinion will change, but for now you just can't beat a good AEG.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Brand?

Krypter
Tokyo Marui - I've tried a decent number of brands since I started and very few seem to have the same degree of build quality, reliability and out of the box performance to them. Saying that, a lot of manufacturers have been stepping up their game so who knows what will happen in the future.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you have any advice for a new player

Krypter
Don't be afraid to walk up and ask questions, especially the younger players. On the whole we're a friendly bunch so if you have a question about someone's gear (even if it's a cheeky "Can I try your gun out?" Ask away. At worst they'll say no but mostly they'll be more than happy to oblige, and most of us won't even charge you for it.

TokyWoky – How to add to basket?

We’ve been getting quite a few questions lately regarding adding things to the basket, so I’ve put this blog together to help people figure it out! And don't forget, if you're still stuck you can always ask the community via TokyWoky as well!

TokyWoky is the chat box at the bottom right side of every page on the website, which allows you all to get in contact with each other and help each other out with questions relating to Airsoft. We answer Shop related questions, but also feel free to ask the community questions, or for recommendations on products. Don’t just take our word for it it, ask the community too!
Hope this helps 🙂

How do I add things to the basket?

To add things to your basket you simply press the big green 'Add to Basket' Button at the top right of any product page. If a product is out of stock, it will not show, and instead there will be text notifying you that the product is out of stock.

The product is in stock.
The product is out of stock.

How often do you get items back in stock?

Visitor
When will u be getting this gun back in stock?

PatrolBase Jonny
Hey there! This can depend on a lot of things, such as if they are available from our Suppliers. Airsoft Guns are made in small batches, and at the moment Supply is smaller than Demand, so sometimes we have to wait for the to come back in to stock! If the items are in stock and we get them from the UK, it is typically once every 1-2 weeks, if we get them from the EU it is every 2-3 weeks, and from the US every 3-4 weeks. If you want a more up-to-date timeframe on a specific item your best bet is to give the shop a call on: 01484 644709, who will be able to let you know more! Hope this helps 🙂
