Feature Friday – Stuart

You may have seen this last week with Sam's P90 on our Instagram account, well now we are taking it a tad further thanks to Stuart (who has been playing a hell of a lot longer).

Every Friday we want to introduce you to our team and show what we use out on the field! Today, let us introduce to you Stuart Manks. Our in-house product photographer and bearded giant. Oh he also runs Halo Mill - Proving Grounds once a month. You can click here for more information.

The Gear:

Stuart's current go-to setup is lightweight, practical and supportive. He likes to run with only what he needs to reduce energy consumption and keep a slim profile for those intense firefight scenarios. A full list found in the pic can be found below:

TokyWoky – Coach of the Month – AirsoftAstronaut

Today we're going to be looking at our coach of the month for February - March 2018: AirsoftAstronaut. Since he became a coach just three months ago he has answered over 800 questions and helped people with a huge range of questions ranging from what magazines go with which gun, what pouches to use, and what brands of guns to go with. Piers, aka AirsoftAstronaut is, plays in and around Essex and has been playing and following the sport for two years, regularly playing at Skirmish Airsoft Billericay, Dragons Lair and Plantation Airsoft. We caught up with him to ask him a few questions, along with getting a few photos of his loadout, and to find out where he plays.

PatrolBase Jonny
How long have you been playing?

AirsoftAstronaut
I’ve been playing and following the sport for around 2 years now after a friend introduced me to it.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your local / go-to site?

AirsoftAstronaut
I started playing at a Skirmish site but since Fall am a regular at Dragons Lair and Plantation Airsoft.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Gun?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite Airsoft gun so far is the CSI XR-5 AEG, I jumped at the chance to get this sci fi gun at (In my opinion) such a great price. Having been given a full serviced over Christmas it now fires at 345fps and occasionally I’ll use a tracer and Red tracer bb’s. (I can confirm that NUPROL STANAG Mid caps feed into this gun, but G&G M16 High caps do not, I also use the CSI brand magazines for this gun too, and know how those specifically work on the inside.)

PatrolBase Jonny
What loadout do you run?

AirsoftAstronaut
My current loadout consists of my much loved Helikon CPU Jacket and trousers in OD green (The fluffy neck collar was the selling point), I wear a pair of Woodland oak high top boots and some very unprotective 5.11 Tactec A2 gloves (This is for the ability to load pistol and gas gun magazines without accidentally letting go and breaking the bb follower.). I wear an OD helmet and custom fitted a tandard mesh mask to it, and wear some bolle ranger glasses as eye pro.
My loadout “Rig” is a Condor Lazer cut black chest rig with 2x double 5.11 grey pistol magazine pouches on, plus 2 of the 5.11 tactec 9mm pouches, and a red EMT pouch, and Helikon Mini Med pouch Red. (These pouches are of great use on the Blue team)
As for the guns, I tend to run my KJW KP-08 Hicapa, or WE G17 which I’ve got some internal upgrades on order for. from there I usually use my CSI XR-5 (it’s white) or my KJW KC-02 DMR, but I’m still waiting for the summer to come and for more magazines to effectively use it.
I transitioned from a belt rig to a chest rig because with my DMR, and that I sometimes use my AEG’s at the same tile, it’s easier to store all of the magazines, though I do still miss the lightweight feel of a belt.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Camo?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite camouflage is probably MTP Tropic, if there was a digital version that’d be brilliant, it is nice and dark and still blends with woodland areas.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Airsoft Moment?

AirsoftAstronaut
My favourite Airsoft moment was at Dragons Lair in Summer 2017 where I charged a small fort by one of the bridges with a battle cry,one of the four defending from that place ran off, didn’t want to get shot by me 🙂 and I finished off the rest with my G17.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you prefer Gas, AEG, or HPA?

AirsoftAstronaut
With the current weather I favour AEG’s, it’s less expensive to keep them in good shape and working, but with my DMR and pistols in the future I may consider HPA given the typical British wet/sub 20 Celsius weather and the improved consistency (plus I HATE mag freeze issues on gas guns.)

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Brand?

AirsoftAstronaut
Having limited experience with airsoft guns of different brands, such that it’s mostly talking to others in safe zones about their guns and experiences with them, as well as through browsing forums and Tokywoky as well. I’d say that my favourite brand for airsoft guns would be ASG (I believe KJW is asg going by both brand symbols on the box of my DMR and Hicapa.) they have a large range of airsoft guns, and other things like their Storm Grenade. For clothing I’d go with Helikon & tactical gear 5.11 because I love their gloves and the TacTec magazine pouches have an easy to remove molle webbing design.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you have any advice for a new player

AirsoftAstronaut
My advice for a new airsoft player is this: if you’ve never played before I urge for them to see what the sport is about by playing a rental game at their most local site. From there it would be extreamely helpful to have a browse through the UKAPU website for guidelines on legal issues and guidelines such as two tone etc.
After this it is a case of being prepared to spend a sum of money (I myself found this to be larger than expected until I read up about Airsoft thoroughly online) on the “basics” which is likely consisting of a gun, appropriate power source, usually a LiPo as most beginners go for AEG’s, from there simply ensure they’ve got some suitable footwear and eye and face protection, and perhaps learn about their new gun at home before playing at a site with it so that they understand the gun, it’s functionality and anything important about it such as fps, magazine compatibility etc (On the topic of magazines I’d suggest avoiding dry firing as it’ll damage the gun.)

Once again, thanks to Piers for helping the community out on TokyWoky, and thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Also thanks to Skirmish Airsoft Billericay, who provided us with the images, who are based in Billericay, Essex. Situated in the heart of beautiful Essex Countryside yet only 10 minutes from junction 29 of the M25 Skirmish Airsoft, Billericay is only 20 minutes from East London. They are only 5 minutes from Basildon and 15 minutes from Chelmsford. If you want to check them out you can check out their Facebook Page at:  https://www.facebook.com/Skirmish-Airsoft-Billericay-65355044979/, or visit their Website at: www.airsoft-billericay.co.uk.

For those who haven’t yet used TokyWoky, it is the Chat System we have running on our website which is featured at the bottom right, and has as similar style to Facebook Chat. The chat box allows you to get in contact with other Airsoft Players browsing the site, allowing you to ask any and all questions should you need the help! The system allows people to rate each other, and allows people to become Coaches, showing that they have helped people with their questions! Each month we will be selecting a user to be our Coach of the Month, and will be someone who we pick who has helped the other users the most!

TokyWoky – Coach of the Month – Sy81

Today we're going to be looking at our coach of the month for December - January 2018: Sy81. Since he became a coach 10 months ago he has answered over 1200 questions and helped people with a huge range of questions ranging from what Battery will fit in which gun, all the way up to recommendations for Rifles and Pistols. Sy is from Darwen in Lancashire and has been Airsofting for roughly 10 years, but unfortunately due to an injury has taken some time out from the sport, and has decided to keep a keen interest. We caught up with him to ask him a few questions, along with getting a few photos of his loadout.

PatrolBase Jonny
How long have you been playing?

Sy81
I have been air-softing roughly for ten years although between 2011 and late 2015 I gave up the sport due to a nasty injury (not air soft related) but kept a keen interest.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your local / go-to site?

Sy81
I returned to the sport taking a few games at First & Only’s Bolton Woodland prior to it being shut, after this I have generally remained with the First & Only team as they cover the majority of my local sites opening The Mill in Wigan and then Area 58 in Heywood before opening The Mill again at a different location which is my go to site at present.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Faviourite Gun?

Sy81
At present my favourite gun is the ASG Armalite SIR M15, which I have had for 12 months and as yet remains stock.

PatrolBase Jonny
What loadout do you run?

Sy81
My current load-out (I’m always changing my mind) is in MTP, A Warrior Assault Systems DCS Plate Carrier fitted with a Viper Quad Mag Sleeve which is more or less permanently attached depending on where / what games I’m playing, MFH twin 9mm pouch, ex-issue grenade pouch, WAS radio pouch, a QD single point sling. I’ve also just purchased a load bearing belt to which is fitted a CQC Holster, Twin Viper 9mm pouch, single 9mm pouch and Olive Green Dump pouch.

This past year I’ve been lazy with clothing and generally worn Helikon SFU trousers with knee inserts and a hooded top / T-shirt and Lowa Combat GTX boots.
For head / face I’ve been swapping about a lot, I used to wear Bolle Rush glasses wita lower face mask, Baseball cap or hat however have started to wear glasses when playing (getting on) and have been trying various goggles / setups in the hope of preventing / stopping fogging up which I have discovered to be nightmare. These range from Bolle goggles to FMA Vented and fan assisted goggles and now trying out paintball style full masks.

All this is ran with the ASG M15 Mentioned (running on ASG 7.4V LiPO) with ASG M15 Mid caps with magpuls, fitted with a fore-grip, touch pad torch and laser and replica 551 Red Dot Sight (occasionally for CQB I will just ditch all my gear and run the M15 with a couple of ASG M15 series Hi-Caps), Secondary being WE G-17 (gen 4) with 5 spare mags running on ASG Ultraair Green gas , Dynatec Dominator BFG and the occasional TLSFx Mk4 Tunderflash.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favourite Camo?

Sy81
As most of my kit is MTP I’d say that it is my favourite camo but if I was to change would look at the Digital woodland or similar.

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Airsoft Moment?

Sy81
My favourite Airsoft moment and possibly most embarrassing was early last year playing CQB, The objective being to plant the bomb in the other teams regen and it had been hard going, around 6/7 of us were in a well sheltered area trying to clear an area leading to the next floor. Next to me was a guy, arm up high and stood there looking rather bored, who I presumed was on our team and being ignored as the fire fight was intense. I gladly medic’d him not noting his arm band to be swiftly knife killed along with the others in the group. I’ve never made that mistake again.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you prefer Gas, AEG, or HPA?

Sy81
I prefer AEGs which is due to not really having any experience with GBB Rifles and having taken a few AEGS apart to service, repair and upgrade it makes more financial sense at present especially when my two sons aged 13 and 15 also being Air-soft fanatics!

PatrolBase Jonny
What is your Favorite Brand?

Sy81
At present my favourite brand is ASG, I’ve never had a problem with any of the ASG gear and found it all to perform brilliantly out of the box, robust and excellent quality. This year I’m looking into a DMR setup for outdoors but as usual can’t make my mind up on which weapon style to use.

PatrolBase Jonny
Do you have any advice for a new player

Sy81
My advice for any new player is don’t be like me! I decided that even before attending a skirmish I wanted all my own guns and gear, I spent a small fortune on an MP5, Mags, vest, pouches, batteries, all based on what I had seen that looked good on you tube or the internet. After 2 games I realised that I just didn’t like the setup or style of gun and it put a massive downer on the sport for me which put me off attending.

Get down to your local site, hire a gun, get a feel for what weapon/s and kit you want and don’t be afraid to talk to people and ask questions, Airsofters have genuinely been the friendliest and most helpful communities I’ve been a part of, I’ve been helped out by complete strangers with kit, repairs and advice and nothing has ever been expected in return hence the reason why I always try to help others if I am able to do so. Most importantly have fun!
